NUC Platform Cabling and Lids

The NUC platform changed hands in 2023, and the accessory question that follows customers around is whether anything they own still fits. The short answer: the brand on the box was never what determined fit. The model and chassis always did.

What changed with the NUC platform?

In July 2023, Intel announced it was pivoting its strategy to enable ecosystem partners to continue NUC systems product line innovation and growth. Under a non-exclusive license, ASUS took over manufacturing, sales and support of the NUC product lines.

Intel produced NUC through the 13th generation — 13th Gen Intel Core processors, which the industry commonly calls Raptor Lake, as in NUC 13 Pro. ASUS identifies its own NUC 14 Pro as NUC14RVH; the industry calls it Revel Canyon. We use the codenames because that is what people search, but they are industry usage rather than vendor terminology.

Some 12th- and 13th-generation lines transferred mid-life to ASUS.

Who supports your NUC, and which dates matter?

This is the part worth writing down, because "ASUS handles it now" is not accurate enough to act on. Per ASUS customer communication dated December 15, 2023:

• Intel accepted new warranty and support cases through January 15, 2024.
• ASUS has handled them from January 16, 2024.
• Gen 5 and Gen 6 NUC warranty and support remain with Intel.
• NUC Laptop support continues to be provided by Intel.

So the handover was neither instantaneous nor total. If you have a Gen 5 or Gen 6 unit, or a NUC Laptop, your route is still Intel.

What determines whether a NUC lid or cable will fit?

Four variables, none of them the brand:

• Generation — the Core generation, and the codename if you have it
• Chassis — specifically whether your model has a 2.5-inch drive bay
• The board's internal storage connector and its specific cable
• Lid footprint and mounting

A caution about the slim-versus-tall shorthand. Within the NUC Pro slim and tall pairs, tall chassis carry the 2.5-inch bay and slim do not — which is where the rule comes from. But it is not a general rule across the platform: the NUC13AN board provides a SATA 6.0 Gb/s combined data and power connector for a 2.5-inch drive, and lines such as Extreme and NUC 15 Performance do not follow the Pro pattern at all. Check your model rather than your chassis height.

As of the models cited here, ASUS has extended the line beyond classic NUC — ROG NUC gaming systems, NUC 15 Performance, NUC 16 Pro — introducing chassis sizes such as roughly 3-liter cases that differ mechanically from classic NUC chassis. Cross-model accessory assumptions carry more risk in the ASUS era than they did before, not less.

Why is the NUC lid the design surface for custom work?

Many NUC chassis open via a removable bottom lid, and that is the mechanical hook for custom and replacement lids — added ports, M.2, antennas, security features, branding.

The opening method varies by model and it is worth confirming yours. Four corner screws is documented for specific 4x4 kits including NUC5i3RYHSN, NUC7i3DNHNC, NUC8ixBEH and NUC10i7FNH. NUC 13 Pro uses a replaceable lid. There is no single rule covering the platform.

Lid fit is per chassis model. This is the part of the NUC platform that is genuinely open to custom manufacturing, and it is where a specified build beats a catalog search.

What should you confirm before specifying NUC cabling or a custom lid?

• Do not assume an accessory built for an Intel-era NUC fits an ASUS-era NUC, or the reverse, without confirming the exact model and chassis.
• Do not assume newer ASUS lines share chassis mechanics with classic NUC — ROG NUC, NUC 15 and 16, and 3-liter cases may not.
• Do not assume every NUC has a 2.5-inch bay — and do not assume chassis height decides it. The NUC13AN board carries a 2.5-inch SATA connector. Check the model.
• Do not assume "NUC" identifies the product precisely enough to specify an accessory. The generation and model are required.
• Do not assume support routes to ASUS. From January 16, 2024 ASUS handles new cases, but Gen 5 and Gen 6 NUC and NUC Laptop remain with Intel.
• Do not assume all NUC chassis open the same way. Four corner screws is documented for specific 4x4 kits; NUC 13 Pro uses a replaceable lid.

What NUC cabling and lids does EPS build to specification?

1. What is the exact NUC model or codename — for example NUC 13 Pro, NUC 14 Revel Canyon, ROG NUC, NUC 15 Performance?
2. Is it a classic chassis (slim or tall) or a newer ASUS chassis such as a 3-liter case?
3. Does that specific model have a 2.5-inch SATA connector? (Check the model, not the chassis height.)
4. Are you adding storage, replacing or customizing a lid, or adding I/O?
5. Do you have the board or model number, or the original accessory, for reference?
